A beam detector is a fire detection device that uses infrared beams to detect the presence of smoke. Using a detector on one wall and a reflector on the one opposite, the detector shoots the infrared beam across an open area to the reflector, which sends it straight back. If smoke is present, rising through the space, it interrupts the beam on its journey, signalling an emergency could be occurring.
